Iran Orders 20 Russian Transport Helicopters as Aviation Procurements Grow: How Capable is the Mi-171?

The Iranian government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia to acquire 20 Mi-171 helicopters, which are reportedly intended to serve in the Iranian Red Crescent Society for emergency response and disaster relief. The helicopters will be used for search and rescue, medical evacuation, firefighting, and other emergency operations. They are expected to be equipped with modern systems, including night-vision capability and specialised medical equipment, with the first four helicopters are scheduled for delivery before March 2027. The reported order closely follows confirmation from Russian sources on June 4 that the Iranian Defence Ministry had ordered 12 Russian Su-30SM2 fighter aircraft, and confirmation in 2025 that 48 Su-35 air superiority fighters had also been ordered.

The Iranian Armed Forces received Russian Mi-28 attack helicopters, its first combat helicopter procured since the Cold War, in early 2026, after receiving Yak-130 combat trainers in 2023. There have been multiple indications that orders for Su-57 fifth generation fighters have also been placed. The procurement of Mi-171 helicopters thus represents part of a recent broader trend towards large scale procurements of military aircraft from Russia. The Iranian Red Crescent Society currently operates a small fleet of U.S.-supplied Bell 412EP rescue helicopters that were procured in the 1970s, as well as a limited number of Mi-171s in older Soviet era configurations.

The Mi-171 is one of the world’s most versatile and widely exported medium transport helicopters, and is a heavily enhanced derivative of the Soviet Mi-8 that combines the proven reliability of the original design with upgraded engines, avionics, and all-weather capabilities. It has been acquired by more than 30 countries for military, civil, and humanitarian missions, earning a reputation as a rugged aircraft capable of operating in some of the world’s harshest environments. One of the Mi-171’s outstanding features is its exceptional performance in high-altitude and hot-weather conditions, as its turboshaft engines allow it to continue operating effectively in mountainous terrain where many other helicopters experience significant reductions in lift and payload capacity. The helicopter is also renowned for its impressive payload and personnel-carrying capacity, as it can transport up to 36 fully equipped soldiers or around 4,000 kilograms of cargo internally, while an external sling allows it to carry even larger loads.

A major strength of the Mi-171 is its adaptability through modular mission equipment. Operators can configure the aircraft for medical evacuation with stretchers and life-support systems, search and rescue with rescue hoists and infrared sensors, firefighting using water buckets or internal tanks, VIP transport, electronic warfare, or armed assault missions with rocket pods, machine guns, and anti-tank missiles. This multi-role capability reduces operating costs by allowing a single helicopter fleet to fulfil diverse operational requirements. The helicopter’s robust construction contributes significantly to its popularity. Designed to withstand austere operating conditions, it can operate from unprepared landing zones with minimal ground support and is engineered for straightforward maintenance in remote locations. Its simple but durable mechanical systems have proven highly reliable over decades of service, while widespread global use ensures good availability of spare parts and extensive operator experience.
