World’s Heaviest Strategic Transports in Production ‘Elephant Walk’: China’s Growing Y-20B Fleet Stages Show of Force

New footage has shown ten Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force Y-20B strategic transport aircraft elephant walk on an unknown runway, representing the largest publicly observed concentration of the aircraft to date. Elephant walks, a term for a large formation of aircraft taxiing together in close succession, are typically used to demonstrate fleet readiness and production progress. While the baseline Y-20 first entered service in 2016, the enhanced Y-20B variant is a significantly enhanced variant with a greater operational range and higher payload. The aircraft first entered service in 2023, and is in production on a much larger scale than the strategic transports of any other country. A primary improvement over the baseline Y-20 is its integration of indigenous WS-20 turbofan engines, which allows for a maximum cargo capacity of 66 tons, exceeding that of the baseline variant which relied on Russian D30KP-2 engines. 

The Y-20B is by far the largest transport aircraft in production anywhere in the world today, and has been used as a basis for developing the YY-20 aerial tanker and the KJ-3000 airborne early warning and control system. The aircraft has a significantly superior range and payload to the Russian Il-76 and U.S. C-130 which are the heaviest transport aircraft produced in the two countries. The growth of the fleet supports China's broader ambition to operate as a global military power, providing the transport capacity needed to reinforce distant theatres and ending the Air Force’s longstanding reliance on ex-Soviet Il-76 aircraft purchased from Soviet successor states. 

Although it has a much lower profile than programs such as the J-20 stealth fighter and new strategic stealth bomber, the Y-20 is one of the most strategically important military aircraft programs China has undertaken in its recent history. The aircraft gives the Chinese People’s Liberation Army the ability to rapidly deploy personnel, vehicles, supplies and humanitarian aid across China and far beyond its borders. Before its introduction into service, the People’s Liberation Army  relied largely on smaller transports such as the Y-8 and Y-9, supplemented by a limited fleet of imported Il-76s, which lacked the capacity needed to move heavy equipment or sustain large-scale overseas operations. With the Y-20, the Air Force can transport mechanised units, air defence systems, engineering equipment and logistical supplies thousands of kilometres in a single flight. This dramatically shortens deployment times during military contingencies, disaster relief operations, and non-combatant evacuation missions.
