Russian S-400 Air Defence Systems Achieved Unprecedented Shootdowns Using New Long Range Targeting Method

Senior Russian military officials have disclosed new details regarding one of the most successful periods of the Russian Aerospace Forces' air defence operations during the war in Ukraine, revealing that S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile systems destroyed 24 Ukrainian aircraft in the space of a single week in 2023 using a previously undisclosed over-the-horizon engagement tactic. The information was published in the latest edition of the Russian Defence Ministry's journal Voyennaya Mysl, in an article co-authored by Major General Alexander Romanenkov, Chief of the Air Defence Missile Forces of the Russian Aerospace Forces. This included the shooting down of ten Ukrainian MiG-29 fighters in a single day, after Ukraine had surged its fighter operations having received significant numbers of new MiG-29s as donations from NATO member states.

Rather than positioning long-range air defence batteries in conventional defensive locations, Russian forces reportedly deployed S-400 launchers in concealed forward "ambush" positions capable of engaging Ukrainian aircraft almost immediately after take-off. By exploiting long-range target designation from external sensors, the launchers were able to fire at aircraft beyond the radar horizon, dramatically expanding the effective engagement envelope of the system. While ground-based air defence systems are typically constrained by the limited engagement ranges of ground-based radars, Russia’s pioneering of new over-the-horizon engagement capabilities for the S-400 in particular, using targeting data from other sensors such as those on A-50U AEW&C systems, was reportedly key to allowing it to inflict heavy losses on hostile air power.

The scenarios described remain plausible, since fighters may have given air defence systems a wide berth, but taken major losses once systems displayed unexpectedly long range targeting capabilities. Alongside the ten MiG-29s, the types of the remaining 14 aircraft destroyed were not specified. The figures correspond closely with comments made by then Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in October 2023, when he announced that newly introduced employment methods for Russian air defence systems had resulted in the destruction of 24 Ukrainian aircraft within five days. Although the MiG-29 is one of the world’s most manoeuvrable fighter types, variants in Ukrainian service are decades past obsolescence, with lack of stealth or modern electronic warfare capabilities leaving them highly vulnerable if operating within targeting range. Maintaining distance from Russian air defences has been a primary consideration for Ukrainian fighters throughout the air campaign.

Although the authors acknowledged that the tactic has now been thoroughly analysed by Ukrainian forces, and is unlikely to achieve similarly dramatic results in future, they argued that the concept remains operationally valuable. The article concludes that wherever possible, long-range missile launchers should continue to be deployed in positions allowing hostile aircraft to enter engagement zones immediately after departing their airfields, minimising the time available for evasive action or mission execution. The S-400 was specifically designed for over-the-horizon air defence engagements, with the 40N6 missile, which the system began integrating in the late 2010s, having a range of 400 kilometres, and designed to climb to high altitudes before descending against their targets using targeting data from offboard sensors. This has been tested extensively in the Ukrainian theatre.

The publication of the new details in Military Thought is also notable because the journal is widely regarded as one of the Russian military's principal forums for analysing operational lessons from ongoing conflicts. Articles published by senior officers often provide insight into doctrinal developments before they appear in official field manuals or force-wide regulations. Romanenkov's discussion therefore suggests that over-the-horizon ambush tactics have become an established component of Russian air defence doctrine, even if the specific conditions that enabled their initial success are unlikely to be replicated.

While the S-400 was first used in combat in February 2022 during the initiation of Russian operations against Ukraine, it also played a central role in the Indian air campaign against Pakistan in May 2025, and was credited with shooting down five aircraft during the brief engagement. CEO of the Almaz-Antey Group responsible for developing the system, Yan Novikov, in December 2025 stressed “the enormous modernisation potential of the S-400 air defence missile system, which allows us to quickly mitigate emerging threats during the special military operation. Owing to this potential, the Triumph has acquired new capabilities and properties that are generally uncharacteristic of air defence systems.”
