Is this China’s Next Sixth Generation Fighter Prototype? Rapid Progress in Development Brings Service Entry Estimates Closer

Following the release of footage on July 23 confirming the flight testing of the fifth prototype of the Chengdu Aircraft Corporation’s sixth generation fighter, questions have been raised regarding whether a prototype observed days prior may have been the same aircraft. The prototype in question appears different from its predecessors, but the image quality has made it challenging to discern whether this may be due to the angle of the image, or whether it has new distinct features that would make it the fifth prototype. Prototypes in Chinese fighter programs have appeared increasingly similar to serial production standards over time as modifications are gradually made, with multiple sources indicating that the fifth prototype may be the first representative pre-production aircraft.

The Chengdu Aircraft Corporation is currently producing China’s premier fifth generation fighter type, the J-20, which is being procured by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Air Force at a far higher rate than any other fighter type is being procured by any other service in the world. Procurement rates are estimated at 100-120 fighters per year, with approximately 500 fighters now estimated to be in service. Two sixth generation fighter types are expected to serve as direct successors to the J-20, including the ultra long range ultra heavyweight type developed by Chengdu, and a lighter but still very heavy type developed by the Shenyang Aircraft Corporation which has similar dimensions to the J-20.

Following the unveiling of the first prototype of the Chengdu sixth generation fighter in flight on December 26, 2024, the rapid progression through prototype stages indicates that the program is being strongly prioritised for funding. The program was previously expected to produce a fighter ready for active service in the early 2030s, although some analysts have posited that it could become operational as early as 2029-2030. China is expected to face growing military pressure from the United States and other Western Bloc countries from the early 2030s, as the U.S. and its strategic partners reorient their military focuse away from Eastern Europe and the Middle East and towards East Asia. Fielding a very high performance sixth generation fighter a decade before any other country would be a game changer for the balance of power in East Asia.

The development of new sixth generation fighters complements the broader modernisation of China’s aerial warfare capabilities, including the development of new communications satellites, air-to-air missile types, and the world’s fastest production rate of new airborne early warning and control systems (AEW&Cs) and tankers. The very long range of the fighter developed by Chengdu, however, means that it may be required to operate deep into the Pacific without significant support, beyond possible refuelling support when operating near Chinese territory. The aircraft’s outstandingly large nose cone is expected to accommodate the world’s largest radar built for air-to-air combat, reducing reliance on AEW&Cs, while its combination of advanced stealth capabilities and high manoeuvrability could allow it to remain survivable deep inside hostile-controlled airspace.
