Korean Aerospace Industries to Lease T-50 Jets to the U.S. Air Force

The U.S. Air Force will lease the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 Golden Eagle advanced combat trainer, a platform which has seen widespread sales in both trainer and combat variants from Southeast Asia to Iraq and Argentina. The jet is well optimised to train pilots to operate the latests American combat jets, which South Korea also operates, and is highly capable in combat in its own right - ranked as the most capable trainer in terms of combat performance outside of China and Taiwan. While the U.S. Air Force intends to rely on the T-7A Red Hawk to meet its future requirements for advanced trainers, the T-50 which has been in mass production for several years will be able to provide for the service’s requirements in the interim. The possibility of an eventual purchase of the Korean jets alongside the Red Hawk cannot be ruled out, and Lockheed Martin which developed the aircraft with KAI has notably continued to list the platform on its website as a contender to provide for the Air Force’s needs despite the Boeing Red Hawk having been selected. With the U.S. facing a massive shortage of trained pilots, acquiring sufficient modern training aircraft in short order is particularly vital.
