Chinese Army Units Facing Taiwan and Japan Receive First Heavy Tanks: How Capable is the Type 99?

The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Ground Force has for the first time equipped a unit operating under the Eastern Theatre Command with Type 99 main battle tanks, providing a significantly superior combat potential to the much lighter Type 96 and Type 96A tanks which units operating under the command have relied on for decades. The Type 99 provides a notable increase in the firepower, protection, and battlefield survivability to frontline armoured formations in the region, which is particularly important due to the theatre’s strategic significance facing both the Taiwan Strait and Japan. The Type 99 is China’s premier third generation main battle tank, and is significantly superior to the Type 96 family in terms of fire controls, mobility, and armour protection levels. 

Although both the Type 96 and Type 99 are equipped with a 125 mm smoothbore guns, the Type 99 benefits from a more advanced fire control system including higher-quality thermal sights, allowing it to detect, track, and engage targets more effectively, particularly while moving or engaging from longer ranges. Although the Type 99 is considerably heavier at 58 tons compared to the Type 96’s 45 tons, it integrates a significantly more powerful 1,500 hp diesel engine, compared to the approximately 1,000 hp engine used by the Type 96, ensuring a much higher power to weight ratio. The commander of the Type 99 has an independent panoramic thermal sight, allowing him to search for new targets while the gunner is engaging another. This ‘hunter-killer’ capability significantly shortens engagement times and increases combat effectiveness against multiple threats.

The Eastern Theatre Command has received priority for the deployment a wide range of advanced equipment in recent years, including new amphibious assault ships, destroyers, air defence systems, and fifth generation stealth fighters. The more limited utility of main battle tanks in a potential Taiwan Strait conflict, however, resulted in the command not receiving any tanks more advanced than the Type 96 in the past. It remains possible that the Type 99 tanks were reallocated from other higher priority units, as these have begun to receive the more advanced Type 100 next generation tank. The Type 100 is a fourth generation tank first unveiled in 2025, and is the first Chinese tank considered to be leading the world in the sophistication of its design features.

Photographs of the newly deployed Type 99 tanks suggest that lessons from contemporary conflicts are continuing to influence armoured warfare doctrine, with the images showing two support rods mounted on the side of the turrets which are thought to be intended to support the installation of protection ‘cages’ against top attack. This design feature was pioneered by Russia in 2022, and has been widely integrated by multiple militaries including South Korea and Israel. The primary shortcomings of the Type 99 are its higher fuel consumption and maintenance requirements than the Type 96, which combined with its higher procurement cost resulted in a decision to produce both tank types in parallel, with the Type 99 produced in more limited numbers to equip more elite units.
