Iranian Forces Down America’s Heaviest and Most Advanced Drone; $180 Million MQ-4C Triton Lost

Iran’s armed forces have reportedly downed a Northrop Grumman MQ-4C Triton heavy surveillance drone operated by the United States Navy - which accord to Iranian reports was operating within Iranian airspace. The downing was confirmed by U.S. officials, although American sources claimed that the aircraft was flying in international airspace over the Straits of Hormuz. It is as of yet unclear how Iran downed the drone - with the country deploying fighter jets such as the F-14, air defence systems such as the S-300PMU-2 and even electronic warfare systems which have been used to commandeer high end American drones in the past. Commander in Chief of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps Major General Hossein Salami stated that the incident was a warning to the United States at a time of growing tensions, adding: "The only way for our enemies to be safe is to respect our sovereignty, national security, and the national interests of the great Iranian nation.” Iranian reports indicate that the drone was brought down by the Revolutionary Guards Corps, although this remains unconfirmed.

The downing of the Triton represents a considerable loss for the U.S., particularly if the aircraft falls into Iranian hands even partially in tact. The drone is currently considered the most advanced in service in any Western nation, and was first introduced into service only 13 months ago in May 2018. The cost of the MQ-4C program is around $13 billion, and each drone costs over $180 million. This makes the MQ-4C among the most expensive aircraft in the American inventory, with a cost over double that of the new F-35A stealth fighters. The drone is among the largest ever developed with a 40 meter wingspan (more than four times that of an F-16) and an impressive 30+ hour endurance and 18km altitude.The Triton has been deployed extensively to the Asia-Pacific region, and is relied on heavily for patrols over the South China Sea in particular. Considering the close defence partnership between Iran and China, it is highly likely that any information gained on capabilities of the Triton and its weaknesses by Iran's armed forces will be provided to the Chinese People’s Liberation Army and other U.S. adversaries. 

Note: Initial American reports stated that the aircraft downed was an MQ-4C Triton. Later reports indicate the aircraft was in fact a RQ-4 Global Hawk. This is a highly similar platform operated by the U.S. Air Force from which the U.S. Navy's Triton is closely derived - which costs over $220 million per aircraft or 22% more than the MQ-4C.
