Top Hezbollah Commander Just Survived an Israeli Assassination Attempt

A senior commander for the Lebanese paramilitary group Hezbollah, Ali Karaki, has survived an Israeli assassination attempt, after a precision strike on a military headquarters in the capital Beirut was launched to eliminate him. The attack occurred on the evening of September 23, with Karaki considered one of the three most high priority targets for Israel within the organisation, and having been moved to a safe place in the aftermath. Confirmation of his survival follows multiple reports from Western media outlets, citing Lebanese military sources, that the commander was eliminated during an Israeli attack on Beirut’s Madi neighbourhood. Karaki is the the third highest commander in the organization, and has been given authority over the southern front with Israel since October 2023 when hostilities broke out on the Israeli-Lebanese border. Israeli strikes have consistently singled out Hezbollah leaders for assassination, with a notable example being a successful air strike on the position of senior Hezbollah commander Taleb Sami Abdallah on June 12 near the Lebanese city of Tyre, and the assassination of the head of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit, Ibrahim Aqil, in a precision strike on Beirut on September 20. 

The attempted assassination of Karaki comes less than a week after an Israeli operation to launch mass explosions across Lebanese territory by detonating pagers and other communications devices, which have caused over 3000 casualties. It comes amid a mass bombing campaign against population centres across southern Lebanon. Israeli media outlets have increasingly referred to the initiation of a Third Lebanon War, stating that military operations against Hezbollah are likely to escalate in the following weeks before winter weather begins to seriously complicate operations due to the harsh winter climates in Lebanon’s mountainous regions. Hezbollah is considered the most successful military organisation to have faced Israel in the country’s 75 year history, with Israeli experts having described it as “a defensive guerrilla force organised along North Korean lines.” The construction of a vast network of fortified bunkers and tunnels spanning thousands of kilometres under Southern Lebanon in the 2000s by North Korean specialists is considered a major factor in Hezbollah’s ability to weather Israeli attacks. Hezbollah is credited with dealing Israel its only military defeat, which was achieved in 2006 during a month long war.  The Lebanese paramilitary has demonstrated sophisticated military capabilities on multiple occasions, including the ability to use drone and artillery assets for air defence suppression, such as neutralising Israel’s Iron Dome air defence systems.
