Air Strike Kills Top Hezbollah Commander as Israel Initiates ‘Third Lebanon War’

An Israeli ai strike has killed the head of Hezbollah’s elite Radwan unit, Ibrahim Aqil, after a precision strike on the Lebanese capital Beirut. The attack also killed several senior officers serving under Radian, with the attacks having caused over 20 casualties. Aqil had served as one of Hezbollah’s most senior military officials for the last 20 years, and played an important role in the Hezbollah war effort against Israel in 2006 which is considered to have inflicted Israel’s only military defeat in its history. The attack follows an Israeli operation to launch mass explosions across Lebanese territory detonating pagers and other communications devices which have caused over 3000 casualties. It also follows a continued pattern of Israeli strikes singling out Hezbollah and other adversary leaders for assassination, with a notable example being a successful air strike on the position of senior Hezbollah commander Taleb Sami Abdallah on June 12 near the Lebanese city of Tyre. Israeli media has in recent days increasingly referred to the initiation of a Third Lebanon War, while local media outlets have highlighted that a full scale military operation is likely to begin in the following weeks before winter weather begins to seriously complicate the possibility of operations - with Lebanon's mountainous regions having particularly harsh climates in the season. 

Israeli experts have described Hezbollah as “a defensive guerrilla force organised along North Korean lines,” with its forces having received significant support from Pyongyang as well as Tehran since the 1980s. Following an intensive war with Israel in 2006, its forces gained extensive experience in the 2010s fighting alongside Russian and Syrian forces against Western, Israeli and Turkish backed jihadist groups in Syria to support Damascus’ counterinsurgency efforts. Since October 2023 Hezbollah and Israel have engaged in a near continuous series of skirmishes, with the militia having initiated hostilities to stretch Israeli forces during their operations against Palestinian paramilitaries across the country’s southern border in the Gaza Strip. The Lebanese paramilitary has demonstrated sophisticated military capabilities on multiple occasions, including the ability to use drone and artillery assets for air defence suppression, such as neutralising Israel’s Iron Dome air defence systems. Most recently clashes on September 19 saw Israeli forces take eight casualties after Hezbollah targeted them with anti tank weapons.
