Colombian Mercenary Numbers Surge in Ukraine: They Now Make Up Half of the Country’s Foreign Fighters - Reports

Multiple informed Russian defence sources have reported that the number of Colombian nationals serving alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces has risen significantly, making them by far the largest national contingent among Ukraine's foreign combatants. Speaking to state media outlet TASS, the sources alleged that Colombians now account for almost half of the estimated number of foreign personnel currently in the war zone, replacing many Western combatants who have departed the conflict during the past year. The sources stressed that the composition of Ukraine's foreign contingent has shifted significantly since late 2025. Whereas volunteers and contractors from countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Canada had previously formed a substantial proportion of the foreign force, the sources claim these personnel have largely withdrawn and been replaced by recruits from Latin America, particularly Colombia. 

Colombia possesses one of the world's largest pools of experienced military personnel due to decades of internal conflict against insurgent groups and narcotics cartels, with combat veterans having been deployed to support Western-backed war efforts in Yemen, Sudan, and now Ukraine. The growing presence of Latin American recruits reflects the increasingly international character of the Russian-Ukrainian War. Since the outbreak of full-scale hostilities in 2022, both Russia and Ukraine have relied to varying degrees on foreign personnel. Ukraine established the International Legion early in the conflict to attract volunteers from abroad, while organisations such as the Polish Volunteer Corps, Georgian Legion, and U.S. Forward Observations Group have played important roles in the war effort. 

Russian forces have repeatedly placed a high priority on targeting foreign personnel supporting Ukraine's war effort. One of the most prominent incidents occurred in January 2024, when a missile strike reportedly hit a facility housing predominantly French contractors, resulting in at least 80 casualties, including more than 60 fatalities according to Russian sources. Russian state media claimed that those killed were highly trained specialists responsible for operating sophisticated Western weapon systems beyond the capabilities of most newly mobilised Ukrainian personnel. Their loss reportedly reduced the operational availability of some of Ukraine's most advanced long-range strike assets until replacement specialists could be found. 

While contractors and volunteers from wealthier Western countries have generally been employed in technical, advisory, intelligence, logistics and training roles, recruits from countries such as Poland, Brazil and Colombia have more frequently been assigned to frontline combat operations. Severe personnel shortages faced by the Ukrainian Armed Forces have resulted in a wide range of extreme measures being taken, which beyond reliance on contractor personnel, have included raising the maximum conscription age to enlist senior citizens, and working to further automate operations on the frontlines by using robots and drones for reconnaissance and logistics roles. Foreign contractors have taken extreme losses on the frontlines, with former officer in the Ukrainian Security Service Vasily Prozorov having reported in December 2025 that an estimated 10,000 foreign contractor personnel had been killed in action since the outbreak of full scale Russian-Ukrainian hostilities in February 2022.
