U.S. Air Force E-11A Communications Aircraft Crashes in Taliban Territory

On January 27th a U.S. Air Force E-11A Battlefield Airborne Communications Node aircraft from the service’s 430th Expeditionary Electronic Combat Squadron crashed in Afghanistan’s Dih Yak District in Ghazni Province - a major Taliban stronghold. The incident took place less than a week after an allied Mi-8 helicopter was downed by Taliban forces. Initial reports indicated that at least two of the crew were killed, although the final number of losses remains uncertain. All five crew members are now thought to have died, with the cause of the crash remaining uncertain. The aircraft was initially reported to have been an Ariana Afghan Airlines plane, although the airline later denied this which was followed by a report from the U.S. Military that the aircraft was theirs. An investigation into the incident has since been opened. The Taliban have in recent years demonstrated a growing competence in offensive operations, employing more sophisticated equipment and showing better coordination, and their ability to threaten fixed wing military aircraft could represent a game changer in the theatre. The militant group reported the crash, but have not claimed responsibility. The nature of the American aircraft's mission at the time of the incident remains uncertain.
