Advancing Hamas Units Capture Dozens of Israeli Merkava Tanks and Hundreds of Armoured Vehicles in Rapid Offensive

The Palestinian militia group Hamas has captured several dozen Israeli Army Merkava tanks, as well as hundreds of other military vehicles including M113 series armoured personnel carriers and various tactical vehicles. The speed at which Hamas’ forces have advanced, striking simultaneously from the sea, from land and even from the air using gliders to infiltrate special forces units, has taken the Israeli Army by surprise and forced it to abandon key positions including multiple major weapons stockpiles. Taking an Israeli military base near the town of Rafah, the militia’s forward units also captured Israeli armour at various military checkpoints, while launching drone strikes which are confirmed to have destroyed other vehicles including Merkava IV tanks as part of combat operations.

Light armoured vehicles and Israeli military uniforms could allow Hamas units to quickly advanced further into enemy territory, while it is expected that tanks and other heavier vehicles will be salvaged for ordinance and fuel and then destroyed to avoid the possibility of their recapture by Israeli forces. The possibility that Hamas rear guard units could seek to move tanks back to Gaza from positions near the border, perhaps with assistance from Israeli prisoners, has nevertheless been speculated. Pictures with the vehicles have provided a major propaganda coup for the Palestinian force, which did not previously have a reputation for military efficiency unlike its much better armed and trained Lebanese strategic partner Hezbollah. Israeli forces exchanged light artillery fire with Hezbollah on October 8, although it remains uncertain whether the much more powerful Lebanese militia, which fields firepower hundreds and possibly thousands of times greater than Hamas, will meaningfully join the war effort.
