French Fighters on Both Sides: ‘Normandie-Niemen’ Drone Squadron Helping Russia to Repel Ukraine’s Kursk Offensive

Footage from the zone of hostilities in the Russian Kursk region has confirmed the deployment of French volunteer fighters from the UAV detachment "Normandie-Niemen.” Unlike the vast majority of Western volunteer units, which support the Ukrainian war effort, the Normandie-Niemen is named after an air unit that served alongside the Soviet Red Army during the Second World War, and supports the Russian war effort against Kiev and its NATO partners. The creation of this drone unit and its naming has fuelled criticisms in the Western world that the name of the French volunteer unit from the 1940s is being exploited by Moscow for propaganda purposes. Alongside Western volunteers, who have deployed to Ukraine in their hundreds in units such as the Georgian Legion and the Polish Volunteer Corps, contractors from Western countries have deployed to the theatre in considerable numbers. Such contractors have included French personnel, the numbers of which increased significantly from late 2023.

French contractors were specifically singled out for targeting in Russian strikes in January 2024, with a missile attack on the headquarters of predominantly French European foreign fighters in Ukraine on the evening of January 16 having caused at least 80 casualties, 60 or more of whom were killed. The appearance of personnel from the Normandie-Niemen has thus fuelled allusions to the fact that there are French combatants fighting on both sides of the war. Western contractors have played important roles in allowing Ukrainian forces to more rapidly integrate new military equipment being provided by Western countries, which would otherwise require months or years of training for local forces. By contrast, it has been widely assessed that the primary value of Western volunteers in the Russian Armed Forces their propaganda value, and specifically their support for the Russian narrative that the conflict in Ukraine is against the longer term interests of Western countries such as France.
