Delhi Wants 48 New Mi-17 Helicopters from Russia; A Reliable High Altitude Aircraft Ideal for India's Two Major Fronts

Entering service in 2012, the Mi-8MTV-5 helicopter was developed to modernise the rotorcraft transport capabilities of the Russian military based on an airframe which entered service in 1977. The platform was equipped with cutting edge Klimov TV3-117VM turboshaft engines and state of the art new avionics. The helicopters make use of a loading ramp instead of the clam shell doors, and are specialised in transporting equipment rather than personnel. These platforms also have the potential to deploy rockets and cannons. With the Russian Defence Ministry planning to induct 40 of these aircraft to enhance its logistics capabilities an export variant, the Mi-17, has also been offered to the country defence clients. A leading client for Russian arms, the Indian armed forces is holding talks with rotorcraft designer Russian Helicopters – and is in the final stages of concluding an agreement for the acquisition of 48 Mi-17V-5 transports under a $1.1 billion contract. With the price having been finalised, the signing of the contract is expected in October during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India.

Under the contract for the new helicopters all vendors are reportedly required to invest 30% of the contract value into the Indian defence sector - part of a general trend in recent Indian arms deals aiming to strengthen its domestic arms industries. India currently operates over 150 Mi-17 helicopters, and with its ground forces deployed on two major fronts - a western front with Pakistan and an eastern front on the Chinese border - the ability to transfer supplies quickly and in large quantities across the country’s vast expanse as needed remains an essential asset. The Mi-17V-5 aircraft are equipped with night vision technology, weather radars, advanced PKV-8 autopilot systems and, according to Russian Helicopters, a new KNEI-8 avionics suite which provides “a very clear and intuitive cockpit with four large multi functional displays that are easy to read and help reduce pilot fatigue” - while also helping to reduce pre flight inspection time. The aircraft’s new engines allow it to reach speeds of 250 kilometers per hour, while their efficiency ensures a range of 580 kilometres - which can be almost doubled to 1065 when using two auxiliary fuel tanks. The helicopters can carry a sizeable load of up to 8,500 kilograms - including 4,000 kg internally and and an additional 4,500 kg externally using a sling. These specifications are key to making it a highly effective transport for the Indian military’s defence needs - providing key logistical support. The Mi-17V-5's ability to reliably operate at high altitudes of up to 6 kilometers has made it a valuable asset given the growing strategic importance of the Himalayan mountains and India’s mountainous borders with China - with the helicopter serving as a valuable means of providing logistical support to Indian Army units stationed in this region.
