China’s New Type 054B Frigate Gains 50 Percent Firepower Boost for Improved Far Seas Combat Capacity

China has significantly increased the missile capacity of its latest Type 054B guided-missile frigates, with satellite imagery indicating that a vessel under construction has received a 50 percent greater number of vertical launch cells for cruise and surface-to-air missiles. The development was identified in satellite imagery captured by U.S. intelligence company Vantor, showing a Type 054B under construction at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai. The first two Type 054Bs, Luohe and Qinzhou, are understood to feature four eight-cell launch modules, providing 32 vertical launch cells. The newer vessel appears to have six eight-cell modules, potentially increasing the total to 48 cells. With the ship type already being substantially larger and more capable than the preceding Type 054A class frigates, it has long been speculated that they could benefit from a significant firepower upgrade.

The Type 054B’s design has incorporated major advances in propulsion, sensors, stealth, automation, and long-range operations, providing a far superior blue water operational capability and greater suitability for carrier escort missions. Replacing the Type 054A’s conservative diesel-powered propulsion systems, the Type 054B integrates a far more advanced integrated electric or hybrid propulsion architecture that reduces its acoustic signature while improving fuel efficiency and power generation. This is important for anti-submarine warfare operations, where quietness is critical. The ship’s increased electrical output also supports modern radar systems, electronic warfare suites, and future high-energy weapons that older designs could not easily accommodate.

The Type 054B’s vertical launch system is associated with the HHQ-16 family of surface-to-air missiles and the Yu-8 rocket-assisted anti-submarine weapon. Increased firepower is particularly important for a frigate expected to operate as part of larger naval formations. A ship conducting air defence, anti-submarine and escort missions must balance its missile inventory between different threats. More launch cells reduce the extent to which commanders have to sacrifice one capability in order to strengthen another. 48 cells provides the ships with comparable firepower than much larger European destroyers, although significantly less than the 64 and 112 cells on China’s most capable surface combat ships the Type 052D and Type 055 class destroyers.

The Type 054B remains restricted by its lack of integration of a universal vertical launch system capable of carrying long-range air-defence, anti-ship, land-attack missiles, unlike similarly sized Russian and North Korean ships. This makes the ships much less versatile, but is well suited to allowing them to support larger carrier groups alongside destroyers. The first Type 054B, Luohe, entered service in January 2025, with additional vessels now under construction, providing an opportunity for China to introduce design modifications during serial production. Its increased firepower allows the Navy to distribute more missile capacity across a larger number of relatively inexpensive warships rather than concentrating weapons exclusively aboard its largest destroyers.
